The Stallings Pavilion stands in a peaceful setting, surrounded by nature. It’s an exemplification of balance, with carefully-thought-out proportions and a sophisticated design that merges modern aesthetics with traditional craftsmanship. Our client brought in a hand-crafted wooden reference model to share their dream. We were able to design a full-size structure translating their wishes into a timber reality. Executed in the material of choice, Douglas Fir, a heavy timber recognized for its strength and its beautiful grain, provided not only structural soundness but a wood that exudes an organic connection with the environment.

The pavilion’s structure utilizes an enhanced hip roof design with exposed trusses on each of the four sloping sides. The roof pitches are joined seamlessly at the top roof peak and accented by a cupola in the center, creating a point that exudes a sense of symmetry and stability throughout the structure. The overhanging eaves of the roof provide ample shade and weather protection, offering a welcoming coolness during the sun’s peak hours. The roof is finished with traditional roofing shingles, with timber decking on the interior ceiling offering natural materials. The dark shingle roofing contrasts nicely with the golden hue of the Douglas Fir, and contributes to the structure’s resilience in facing the elements.

The principal structure of the pavilion consists of heavy timber posts and beams, showcasing the timeless technique of mortise-and-tenon joinery. This traditional woodworking method ensures the timber parts are securely interconnected, making the pavilion stable and robust. The joints, snugly fitting together, reveal a craftsmanship that is truly awe-inspiring.

Towering column posts of Douglas Fir rise to meet the hefty horizontal beams that bear the roof’s weight, forming a rhythmic, repeating pattern around the pavilion’s periphery. Each column’s base is anchored to masonry footings, grounding the structure while raising the timber off the damp ground to prevent decay, further extending the life of the structure.

Inside the pavilion, the heavy timber framework is exposed, with the rich tones of the wood providing a warm, inviting environment. The ceiling reaches high, with the structural components of the hip roof revealed in an intricate pattern of beams and rafters accented by four skylights allowing natural light to illuminate the interior throughout the day. This intricate web of interlocking wooden elements not only provides structural integrity but also creates a stunning visual display that plays with light and shadow.

Spaces & Light

On all sides of the pavilion, the spaces between the structural columns remain open for easy enjoyment and accessibility from any side. This allows a flood of natural light to enter while providing an unhindered view of the surrounding landscape. At the same time, these openings blur the boundaries between the inside and the outside of the pavilion and allow the gentle breeze to flow through the structure.

An Homage to Age-Old Traditions

Detailed Eave Brackets & Open Truss Entryways

Curved wooded braces and detailed eave brackets feature hand crafted appeal and adorn decorative accents in each of the open truss entryways. These elements add structure and elegance to the timber frame pavilion. As a whole, this pavilion is not only a structure, it’s an homage to the age-old traditions of woodworking, craftsmanship, and a celebration of natural materials that offer a serene space for people to relax and connect with nature.
